A Scene in a Therapist's Office
Therapist: "Usually during our first therapy session I like to get to know a little more about my patient's life and background. Often, by understanding context, I can help bring illumination to the particular problems my patient wants to work on. So, I see you have a parenting issue you would like to talk about. As I understand it, you now have some remorse about naming your child Taxcuts and would like to bring some resolution to these feelings. Well, as parents, we all make mistakes and we cannot beat ourselves up too much about this."
Therapist: (nodding thoughtfully) I see. And when did you begin to question this choice?
Patient: Well, it started when we enrolled him in daycare. The other kids all had names like Oliver and Amelia. You know, normal names. And then there was our Taxcuts. It was fine at first, but when the teacher called out, "Taxcuts, please put your blocks away," I… I just felt everyone's eyes on me.
Therapist: That must have been uncomfortable.
Patient: And then came the nicknames. The other kids started calling him "Tax Bill" or "IRS." One particularly clever child even started calling him "Loophole."
Therapist: Children can be very creative.
Patient: Yes, but it's gone too far. Last week at soccer practice, another parent came up to me and said, "I guess Taxcuts is your deduction, huh?" (groans) I didn't even have the energy to explain the difference between tax deductions and credits.
Therapist: (leaning forward) It sounds like you're not just struggling with the name itself, but with the unintended symbolism it carries.
Patient: Exactly. And it doesn't help that we've started having second thoughts about our other children's names too.
Therapist: (raising an eyebrow) You have other children?
Patient: (nodding) Yes. Our twins, Deregulation and Stimulus Package.
Therapist: (taking notes) I see. And how are they adjusting?
Patient: Deregulation's doing okay—she's pretty independent, as you might expect. But Stimulus Package is really struggling. He's always trying to give too much to everyone else.
Therapist: Hmm. It seems your children's names might be influencing their sense of self.
Patient: (snapping fingers) That's what I've been saying! But every time I bring it up with my partner, they just roll their eyes and say, "This is what we signed up for."
Therapist: Have you considered renaming them?
Patient: We have, but it feels wrong to undo the names we chose with so much thought. And honestly, I'm not sure Deregulation would even let us. She'd probably file a lawsuit against us for infringing on her freedom of identity.
Therapist: (pausing thoughtfully) Perhaps the first step is less about changing their names and more about redefining what those names mean—for you and for them.
Patient: (brightening) So you're saying I can keep the names, but just… rebrand them?
Therapist: Exactly. Instead of seeing Taxcuts as a symbol of fiscal policy, you could think of him as a reminder of the value of making careful, thoughtful choices.
Patient: (nodding slowly) And Deregulation could be about embracing creativity and freedom.
Therapist: Precisely. And Stimulus Package—
Patient: (interrupting) Could be about generosity and helping others.
Therapist: There you go.
Patient: (smiling for the first time) Doctor, I think I can do this. Thank you.
Therapist: (smiling back) You're welcome. Now, let's talk about the family dog's name. You mentioned it's "Inflation."
(They both laugh nervously as the lights dim.)
